Finisterre or Bust - Day 1

Total distance today - 13.9 miles
Total ascent - 2,133 feet
Cumulative Finisterre distance - 13.9 miles
Cumulative distance - 504.4 miles

Today we started the final leg of our hike across Spain, Santiago de Compostela to Cabo Finisterre.
Sixty miles to go.

It might only be 60 miles, but there are a lot if mountains to climb. Today alone we had two long steep climbs and several shorter ones. We climbed a total of 2,133 feet.

The day started with a nice walk out the other side of Santiago de Compostela and onto a wooded track and quiet country roads.

The first climb allowed us to look back at the skyline of Santiago de Compostela.

After a long 2.8 km downhill walk (we gave up all the height from this morning, plus some), we stopped for lunch and to prepare for the next, and much higher ascent, seen in the distance below.

The afternoon hike gave us a very pleasant surprise. The trail was newly laid stone, just rolled smooth.
Much easier to walk on, but still very, very much UP.
We found the equipment.

In Maceira we crossed another medieval puente. There is a myth surrounding this bridge. According to tradition, Santigo's followers were pursued by Roman soldiers. God destroyed the middle of the bridge to thwart the Romans.  The myth lives on in the coat of arms of the local council.

There are several nice homes next to the river.

We continued walking through wooded treks, meadows,
And next to roads until we came to Negreira, today's destination.

We're tired, and sweaty. Today's weather was in the 80's and humid. Not bad, but warmer than we are used to. The rest of the afternoon was spent taking a shower and putting our feet up. Downstairs for a quick pilgrims dinner, and time for bed.  Four more hiking days to the ocean...
