Astorga to Rabanal del Camino

Total distance today = 13.3 miles
Total ascent = 1,312 feet
Cumulative miles = 338.4 miles

Leaving Astorga this morning, we came across a couple more dead pilgrim memorial crosses-right across the street from each other.

The hike today was a steady ascent through the foothills of the Montes de Leon.

Santa Catalina de Somoza had quite a few cafés for the pilgrims. The villages that we pass through today and tomorrow exist only because of the Camino.

As we left the village we suffered a severe temptation. A taxi - in the middle of nowhere!  Do we succumb  and take a ride into town?  NO! BEGONE!   We were not actually tempted, but were puzzled as to why a taxi was lurking on the Camino path.

Another fallen peregrina. We're still trying to figure out if that tiger is dead or alive.

The later part of the day we spent very near or on the road. It's a quiet country road, but full of blind turns and hills. We had to really listen for cars so we weren't caught off guard.

Not many way markers today, but other pilgrims wanted to make sure we got to our destination.

Our destination today was Rabanal del Camino. It's a centuries old stopping point for pilgrims to rest before tackling Monte Irago, the highest point on the Camino. It is 4,940 feet above sea level.  We will hike over the mountain tomorrow, starting at 3,773 feet. It's not the Rockies, but still a workout.

We stopped at the church on our way through town. It's proportions were perfect, and the altar piece is beautiful.

While the church is available for viewing, the are not overly trusting.

After an uphill climb through the whole town...
We reached our hotel, Posada Gaspar at the very end of town.

We are in a great position to attack Monte Irago tomorrow. Here's to the Montes de Leon.
