Atapuerca to the Big City

Total distance today = 13.4 miles
Total ascent today = 190 feet
Cumulative distance = 180.7 miles

Today started off with the only uphill we had all day.  The track was rockier than most others to date. The blue skies and cool morning made it pleasant enough but most of the day's hike was in industrial suburbs, including a mile walk along the Bridgestone tire factory fence, and a couple miles skirting around the fence for the new Burgos international airport.

At the top of the mountain (3510ft) is a cross and an incredible view west to Burgos, our ultimate destination for today.

This rock formation is also at the top. It spirals in on itself. I'm thinking it is a prayer circle. Anybody else have a guess?

A little further down the other side of the mountain some other scenes came into view -stone quarry.

Late morning and early afternoon was spent walking various roads into Burgos. We missed the turnoff for the "scenic" path, so it was hiking on pavement, by a train depot and airport for the rest of the day.

We thought we'd be able to find a place to eat somewhere on the last four miles in the outskirts of Burgos, but it wasn't until we were a mile from our hotel that we found an acceptable eatery. PIZZA!

We ate and rested for a while, but I just was anxious to get to the hotel and a shower. So I rushed David along, until we saw a gelato stand. Limon for me, perfect on a hot day.  But the siren call of the shower still called. Get me to the hotel.

While trekking through a big city isn't my favorite, the really nice rooms, beds and shower in our room at the fancy Hotel AC Burgos (another big city Marriott) make up for it :)

  1. Maybe the circular rock formations are just the Pilgrim version of crop circles??
